Z for Zachariah 1984 BBC Play For Today Film is based on the book of the same title by Robert C. O’Brien. There is also a more recent film adaptation which was released in cinemas in August 2015. For a comparison of the two film read our Z for Zachariah Film Comparison.

This BBC adaptation is unavailable to buy and has never been converted onto DVD/Blu-ray, but you can watch the full film above.

It is a fairly faithful adaptation of the book. Set in the Welsh Valleys in place of the American setting of the original, it is a film about survival, and also about human interaction. Viewers may now see this as a little dated, however, and perhaps also a bit slow moving for current movie tastes.

Couldn't watch it all
I wanted to like this. It is very just like the book, but boy is it dull. It's also very dated. I haven't seen the 2015 film, which I gather is very different from the book. I'm not sure if this is one of those books that doesn't work as a film, or whether it is because it is quite an old adaptation or some other reason.

I watched most of, but couldn't quite put myself through watching it all.
