The Martian 2015 Film

The Martian 2015 film adaptation directed by Ridley Scott staring Matt Damon is based on the book of the same title by Andy Weir and is just like the book.

The story is about one man’s incredible attempt to survive after being accidentally left behind on Mars. This is a funny, action packed, on the edge of your seat sc-fi movie. Whilst the story is often described as Castaway meets Apollo 13, it also nothing like those movies.

The main character, Mark Watney, is fortunately rather good at problem solving, which is handy when the only thing keeping you alive on an uninhabitable planet is equipment and food designed for only short term use and consumption by a full crew.

Parents and the easily offended may be pleased to note that there is a far more sparing use of the F word.

For anyone inspired by Mark’s courage, NASA will from 14th December will be recruiting for astronauts for a potential future mission to Mars. Deadline for applications is mid February 2016.

SciFi extravaganza
Having read the book first I wondered how this would be adapted for screen but I was not disappointed. The screenplay does a great job of drawing out the story from the perspective of both the abandoned crew member, the remaining crew en route to Earth, and those at NASA on Earth asnthry realise what has happened. The parts of the book that were not included (the detail of the dust storm en route to the Hermes Mav) were well chosen and clearly dispensable. Cant wait for my.DVD copy when it's released.
